Anyone else get the February blues? I tried to combat the feeling by diving into some good books.

Onyx Storm is the third book in the Empyrean series by Rebecca Yarros. The dragons are back in this thick book. The gang go on tons of adventures and of course there is loss and love wound up in the tale.

I always look forward to a new Ali Hazelwood story and Deep End is the same but different for her. It’s a sports romance book where the sports part is important but doesn’t take over the story. This one may be her spiciest romance book yet.

I adored Better Than The Movies and was hesitant and excited to read the follow up, Nothing Like The Movies by Lynn Painter. In this romance book we get the perspective of Olive and Wes. Finding out how and why they broke up was heartbreaking but the HEA (?) was earned.

The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron is a craft book for those looking to tap into their creativity and find a deeper connection to process and purpose. The tasks in this book really make you think and I recommend giving it a try.

You’re probably wondering who that couple is representing Lord of the Rings. Like most everyone I adore Aragon and Arwen’s love story, but I connected with the subtle, slow blooming, not as noticed couple, Faramir and Éowyn. Their tragic backgrounds sang to my soul.

I reference Pride and Prejudice as one of my favourite books so you’re probably wondering why I chose Persuasion instead. I’m working on a modern adaptation of the romance book so it’s very much where my lore started.

Now I have to resist researching the next 20 references. 🤣🤣

Monday Thoughts

The first month of 2025 was rocky. During some trying times, books offered me some escape.

I Wish You Would by Eva Des Lauriers is an angsty, young adult, friends to lovers romance book with a strong miscommunication trope. Luckily the entire book takes place over one day so the theme works.

A big fan of Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club series, I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about a new crime solving crew but Mr. Osman has a way with creating engaging characters. The book has a few plot holes but is endearing, funny, and well worth the read.

I’ve seen The Housemaid by Freida McFadden... well everywhere. I had to give it a read. It was a good distraction but not the jaw dropping twist I was hoping for.

As research for my own bodyguard book, I read Forbidden Hero by Jackie Walker, the second book in the Redleg Security series. It’s a spicy, fast paced romantic suspense book and I’ll be reading more of this series.

Today I lost my hero. I’m a published author in large part because of my father. He read me bedtime stories as a child, made storytelling a fun activity, quoted Shakespeare and poetry almost daily, kept a vast library I had unlimited access to, loved to chat about books and was a storyteller at heart.

At far too young an age, he gave me his copy of The Hobbit and I gobbled it up thus instilling a love for adventure, fantasy, plot twists, beautiful words, and binge reading.

If you like the sass in my writing, fall for the support cinnamon roll characters I create or gasp at the dramatic scenes I infuse my romance books with, you can also thank my dad.

When Gala and I were looking for a name for our romance co-authorship, my father lent me his and William became Willa of @willadrewauthor It was a no brainer to dedicate our first full-length novel to him. And yes, he read the book. That’s how devoted he was to supporting me.

We often talked about writing a book together and even plotted part of a sci-fi saga during our many bookish discussions. Someday I’ll have to finish that story and publish it in his honour. I hope I can do him proud.

But for right now, I’m taking some time to figure out how to breathe around the gapping hole my life.

I recently joined bluesky and saw book lovers and authors posting about books that influenced their lives. To celebrate 2025, I selected 25 books that have made an impact on me and my writing.

Of course, many of these are romance books because I am (albeit late to the game) a romance author. It was fun looking back on the romance stories that I either didn't consider romance back in the day or that inspired me to write my own romance books.

To celebrate 2025 I have been sharing 25 of the books that influenced my life.

On this final day I had to share the book that turned me from an amateur writer into a published author. On April 22, 2022 I published Star Struck, an age gap, brother's best friend romance book under my pen name Willa Drew.

This spicy little novella was inspired by Estelle Pettersen @the_spicy_author who challenged @galarussauthor and I to write a story about a bold, sassy leading lady and Siobhan Casey leapt off the page and demanded we write her.

This book launched my @willadrewauthor universe that now consists of 8 romance books and counting. It's a fan favourite and we constantly get requests from our readers for more of Siobhan and Asher. Siobhan herself tells me that she has more hilarious adventures to get up to and we need to document them.

I'm sharing 25 books that influenced my life to celebrate 205.

Today's book is ... my debut novel, Ruby Red.

Fun Fact: I never expected to write, never mind publish a romance novel. My hobby was writing a sci-fi novel and a fantasy series. But one day my friends and I were discussing our latest reads and my friend was complaining about how every romance book she read had an alpha male and a meek female. My friend turned to me and said that I could write a better romance book. I laughed at her, saying I don't write romance. She then dared me to do it. I laughed again, but a seed was planted.

That night I went home and wrote the first chapter of Ruby Red. It's still mostly the same of that first version. From there the book just flowed out of me. I submitted to a few publishers and was picked up by Champagne Book Group.

That dare changed the course of my life. I now have 9 published books as DL Croisette and Willa Drew and 6 unpublished books I'm editing in the Ruby Red Romances universe. Oh, and so many more stories to write.

No list of the 25 books that influenced my life would be complete without Love Novice by Gala Russ.

Fate connected @galarussauthor and I on Wattpad and when I read her first novel Love Novice I was hooked on her writing. I gobble up everything she writes. Gala has this unique perspective that captivates me and I want to read on and learn more about her characters. Her plots are creative and fresh, funny and sweet, steamy and angsty.

When Gala asked me if I wanted to coauthor a short story with her, I was blown away and jumped at the chance. Long story short, we no write together under the pen name Willa Drew and have 7 romance books and counting published.

Thank you Gala for taking a chance on writing with me, for being my friend and for altering the course of my life for the better.

Today's book Quiet, by Susan Cain is what I call a manual to understanding me. I'm a true introvert and this book was like a revelation for me. A fellow introvert, and good friend gifted this to me and I often share it with others to help us introverts get that someone out there gets us.

I'm celebrating 2025 by choosing 25 books that influenced my life.

Today's book is To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I went through a phase of knocking classical books off my list and when this book won the Best Book of the 20th century I had to read it.

Talk about plot development. If you want a prime example of plot, how to weave character and plot together, this book is a shining example. I've always been a panster but after reading this book I'm moving towards plotting my books in advanced.

I'm kicking off 2025 with 25 books that influenced my life.

Although I write romance, I read a wide range of books. One of my first attempts at writing was a sci-fi book and that's totally due to the brilliant stories by Issac Asimov.

One of the things I admire is how he interconnected his stories. It inspired me to expand my universe of romance books and connect them in small ways. For example, Matt from my White Knight short story is the main character in my current WIP

Love him or hate him, you can't deny Charles Dickens wrote some of the most iconic stories. Back in the day he was paid by the word and thus his stories can be quite ... well... wordy. He might take a paragraph of two to describe the room that a character walked into.

Some of my readers comment on how I paint a picture with my words, and my co-author relies on me at times to fill in pages of what she calls "naked dialogue" with the fun details of the world our characters live in.

I love writing descriptions and it might have a little to do with Dicken's books like David Copperfield.

I first read Lessons on Seduction in a draft version on Wattpad, commented and started having a conversation with the author @the_spicy_author Our chats turned into critique partners and then into a friendship.

Estelle Pettersen writes beautiful romance stories based on bold, brave women who aren't afraid to love the complicated men in their lives. Estelle's writing pushed me to write a first draft of the redemption story for the villain from my Ruby Red romance books.

To ring in 2025 I'm sharing 25 books that influenced my life.

Today's book is Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo. Parts of this book gave me creepy chills but the characters compelled me to keep reading. I have nothing in common with these characters outside of we both went to university yet I felt like they could be my friends they were so real and well created.

Leigh Bardugo's writing inspires me to dig deeper with my characters, find the little details that bring them to life for my readers and make them memorable.

Red, White, & Royal Blue was a random selection plucked off a list of romance books and I had no idea it was a MM romance. I'd never read an MM and this romcom with such heart really set the bar high.

I was uber excited for the movie and it did not disappoint in my books.

I'm just going to say it. I have a girl crush on Emily Henry. If you think my writing is anything in the vicinity of her ball park, I might cry. Book Lovers was the first book my reading buddy group chose to kick off with and man did we set that bar high.

Book Lovers is still, on most days, my favourite EmHen romance book, but its a tough choice as I adore them all. Her last romance book Funny Story rivals Book Lovers and I can not wait to read more from her.

To celebrate 2025 I'm revealing 25 books that influenced my life.

Tessa Bailey's romance book It Happened One Summer breezed into my life (another recommendation from a friend) and taught me just how hot dirty talk can be. Before I read her books (because I've read a lot of her books by now) I thought that kind of dialogue was ... well cringy. But she knocks it out of the park in in romcom novels and has me fanning myself between laughing out loud.

I'm not saying I can achieve that level of fun, but I certainly look to her for inspiration. Plus, she is super nice. I waited 4 hours in line for her to sign my copy of Secretly Yours and she was super kind and friendly.
